Have you ever ignored a Recruiters outreach? Here's why you shouldn't...❌Insurance policy.A Recruiter might reach out to you at a time where you are not actively looking or for a role you aren't interested in... that's fine. We can't possibly know that without trying to reach you.Instead of ignoring (or declining) their outreach, I HIGHLY recommend you Accept and send a quick note back to the recruiter...Something as simple as the automated "Thanks for reaching out, but I am not interested at this time." or "This role sounds great, but let's stay in touch for something in the future." AND send them a LinekdIn invite.Bonus points if you schedule a call with the recruiter still. A good recruiter knows how to keep a pipeline of prospective candidates. Having a conversation can let them know EXACTLY what type of role to reach out to you next or even WHEN they should reach out to you again. It's also far more promising should something unexpectedly change with your work situation and you need to look for something new. Going back to a Recruiter 3 months after "telling them off" or ignoring their message and saying "Can you find me a job?" is awkward for everybody. Building relationships with Recruiters could be the the insurance policy you need for your career. Let us be the Connector in your network.

I have several recruiters in my inbox who have reached out with offers in the past month or two. I have responded to all of them, letting them know I am happy where I am and that, while it would take a lot for me to leave, I am open to listen, I appreciate the offer very much and wish them well on the hunt should they move on. Only 1 of about 10 have responded in the last month, and that’s pretty much the average overall. I find it quite disappointing how often the engagement ends as soon as they see I am currently happy, regardless of the fact that I engaged, thanked them, and wished them well. The one that responded this month and said thanks anyway—she is the role model. The rest, I would be very cautious ever engaging with again. They make me feel as if their only real goal is to hit their quota/get their commission. Just my experience. No bias or hard feelings.

I never want to ignore a recruiter! But I ignore headhunters constantly. Being able to discern the difference very quickly is, IMO, a valuable ability.A true recruiter knows what I do, is aware they just might possibly be looking at an old resume, etc. They ask questions and can support their "out of the box" ideas.A headhunter blasts out emails for positions that your resume doesn't support in cities you don't live and for a pittance of a salary. They aren't worth your time.

Also adding to that, we as recruiters are able to see past responses(decline, accept) via LinkedIn. Now if you decline say 9 months ago and then same 6 months and then same 3 months ago. Now say that you are looking for an opportunity as a candidate, a recruiter reviews your multiple declines, he/she will assume that they will decline this time as well but in reality, you are looking for opportunities. Responses leave a track especially if it is recruiters reaching from the same organization.Recruiter tip- accept the inmails and let them know you are not interested but would like to be in the radar for future.Great post Jesse Zulak

Unpopular opinion, but, how about recruiters doing some homework before reaching out? Like reading my profile and making sure I’m a good fit. I don’t have .net experience, but I get spammed by recruiters all the time like I do.

When recruiters spam me for completely inappropriate roles, I don't respond anymore. Good recruiters spend the short amount of time it takes to scan a resume or LinkedIn page and draw reasonable conclusions about the role they're trying to hire for. I'm a fervent believer in relationship building but I'm equally fervent about respecting others' time.

Jesse Zulak A couple of points. It might be wise to specify technical recruiters. Recruiters come in different shapes and sizes. I've mostly dealt with executive recruiters for the public sector. If someone takes the time to email me personally (as opposed to a spam/form message), I always respond. Finally, a recruiter is to a job what a car salesman is to a vehicle. After I shake hands and walk out of the showroom, I'm living with car. I'm not say recruiters don't fill a valuable role, but I don't have one parked in my garage.

Great advice here! Here is the template of a message I use to reject but still connect with recruiters reaching out 👇🏾—-Hi 👋🏾,Nice to e-meet you and thank you for considering me for the opportunity you reached out about.Unfortunately, at this time I am not looking into new roles. Thank you for your consideration and good luck with your search 🔍 I sent over a connection request and look forward to staying in touch.ITR.

The LinkedIn feature where applicants can send an autogenerated message to the Job Poster is great and all... but... I really dislike how it puts the applicants full Headline into the message. For example:---Hi Jesse, I hope you’re doing well! I’m interested in the role you posted: Software Developer. Based on my experience as Fullstack Developer | React | C# | .NET Core | Angular, I believe I could be a good fit. ---If you're using this feature, I recommend you take a couple seconds and remove that part.
