Buffalo Steamed Mussels Recipe (1)

Back just about a year ago, I shared a super tasty recipe for Bourbon and Bacon Steamed Mussels. It was our sweet 7-year-old Little Miss H's first introduction to eating mussels, and I wasn't so sure how the experience would go. Mussels aren't exactly standard fare for 7-year-olds.

Much to my pleasant surprise, she loved mussels! I just adore her adventurous-eater spirit. God sure knew what he was doing when He blessed me with a child who's willing to try anything when it comes to food.

Well, back when I created thatBourbon and Bacon Steamed Musselsrecipe, I actually created this Buffalo Steamed Mussels recipe, too. Based on our ever-favorite baked Buffalo wings, we figured if Buffalo flavor is great on wings, in dips, and even onBuffalo chicken pizza, then perhaps it would be good with mussels, too.

And do you know what?

We were right!

Turns out Buffalo steamed mussels are quite tasty, indeed.

And since fresh mussels season is in full swing, I figured it was about time for me share this Buffalo Steamed Mussels recipe here on the blog with all of you.

Not only are these Buffalo mussels tasty, they're quick and easy to prepare, too.

Simply grab a large saucepan or Dutch oven and give some chopped shallots a quick saute in butter. Then add some Frank's Red Hot sauce, salt, pepper, and a bit of fresh parsley. Once that comes to a boil, add in the mussels and steam them for about 4 to 7 minutes. That's all there is to it.

Sprinkle the mussels with some blue cheese crumbles to give that classic flavor combination of Buffalo wings dipped in blue cheese dressing. And serve up some celery sticks and crusty bread on the side. The bread is perfect for soaking up and enjoying all that tasty Buffalo sauce filling the mussels shells.

Just as with Buffalo wings, these Buffalo steamed mussels are indeed on the spicy side. But if you love that classic Buffalo spiciness, then these mussels will be a treat, for sure. The Buffalo sauce and tender mussels pair quite nicely. And I love the little "cooler" flavor bite of the blue cheese ... but if you're not a blue cheese fan, you can omit the crumbles no problem.

So if you're a mussels lover and are looking for a great recipe to enjoy them, give this Buffalo Steamed Mussels recipe a try. It's a fabulous tasty twist with the classic Buffalo wings flavor.

prep time: 10 Mcook time: 10 Mtotal time: 20 M

ingredients:

  • 2 lbs. Prince Edward Island (PEI) mussels
  • 2 T. unsalted butter
  • 1/4 c. minced shallot
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 1/4 c. Frank’s Red Hot sauce
  • pinch kosher or sea salt
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper
  • 1/4 c. chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 T. blue cheese crumbles {optional}

instructions:

How to cook Buffalo Steamed Mussels

  1. Rinse fresh mussels under tap water. Tap any mussels that are still open and discard those that do not close after being tapped and rinsed. If any have the sticky wiry membrane referred to as a “beard” remaining (most will not, but you may see one or two), remove the beard by grasping it between your thumb and forefinger and pulling firmly until it comes out; discard beard. Set mussels aside.
  2. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat. Add shallots and saute over medium heat until softened, about 3 minutes.
  3. Add water, Frank’s Red Hot sauce, salt, pepper, and parsley. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Add mussels. Cover and cook for 4-7 minutes or until the mussel shells open, gently shaking the pot a couple of times during cooking to move the mussels around.
  5. Remove from heat, sprinkle with blue cheese crumbles {optional}, and garnish with additional chopped fresh parsley if desired.
  6. Serve with celery sticks and crusty bread to soak up the spicy broth.
