Stephanie McMahon Kicks Off WWE WrestleMania 40

Stephanie McMahon made a surprise appearance to kick off WrestleMania (while CM Punk was still on commentary) to announce the beginning of “The Paul Levesque Era.” This comes just days after Rhodes reportedly applied for the term “The Renaissance Era.”

Renaissance Era figures to be an IWC term to refer to this era, much like the difference between pro wrestling and sports entertainment.

After appearing at the WWE Hall of Fame and kicking off WrestleMania, it’ll be interesting to see just how involved Stephanie McMahon is with WWE now.

Drew McIntyre Def. Seth Rollins, Damian Priest Cashes In

Both Drew McIntyre and Seth Rollins had spectacular entrances. McIntyre had a Scottish entrance with bagpipe players performing Roddy Piper’s classic theme. Rollins was accompanied by a sea of people wearing bright, baggy clothes like a Mardi Gras parade. Apparently this was a Mummers Parade, local to Philly. Rollins was saving this for Night 2 after a standard entrance last night, and it was well worth the wait.

The match started with an early Claymore Kick and a false finish. Moments later, Seth hit an early Stomp. Unlike the WrestleMania 25 main event between Triple H and Randy Orton (which in all fairness had to follow Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker), fans immediately got into the match after the pair of early finishers.

Seth Rollins sold his leg like crazy, meaning he was either going to lose the title to McIntyre or Damian Priest.

The crowd was much better tonight in a much warmer Lincoln Financial Field.

Drew McIntyre trolled his way to a WWE World Championship with multiple Claymore Kicks. Drew finally got his moment, but couldn’t leave well enough alone and got trolled right back by CM Punk. Punk’s attack led to a Señor Money in the Bank cash-in by Damian Priest, who beat McIntyre for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

The Pride Def. The Final Testament

Snoop Dogg was the guest commentator for this match, which I can’t wait to hear when I watch this back on TV. The special guest referee? Bubba Ray Dudley.

Fans popped huge when Dudley put on his old-school eyeglasses to taunt Karrion Kross.

This match really got over in the building, but an otherwise entertaining plunder match was tainted by chants of “turn the lights off.” Even with those bitter chants, it was another example of a crowd that was much more lively and louder than last night.

The Pride vs. The Final Testament Grade: A-

LA Knight Def. AJ Styles

As soon as AJ Styles’ new entrance music played, it was on sight. Styles made a beeline for LA Knight days after the two brawled during WWE Media Day.

Fans resumed chanting “turn the lights off” for the second match in a row. I guess they wanted the ring to be dimmer? I didn’t mind the lights.

If WWE keeps playing with these people and Light-gate goes on long enough, they'll start chanting for Kevin Dunn.

The “turn the lights off” chants took over this match as fans chanted “ooooh please turn the lights off!” and “[expletive] these lights!” They also chanted “I can’t see!” On one hand it’s funny, but on the other hand it’s sad that a great WrestleMania feud was compromised by light issues.

Knight and Styles, two certified pros, refused to let the lights take over this match. They worked their way to a heated finish, which included Knight hitting the BFT for the win and the loud pop.

Following this match, a WWE Saudi Arabia commercial was booed for the second night in a row.

LA Knight vs. AJ Styles Grade: B

Logan Paul Def. Kevin Owens And Randy Orton

Backstage, new WWE Intercontinental champion Sami Zayn wished Kevin Owens good luck, similar to Owens wishing Zayn good luck last night.

Logan Paul arrived in a Prime Monster Truck and, for the second year in a row, a Prime mascot. Kevin Owens, whose KO Logo received an ECW-inspired update, arrived in a more humble golf cart. Owens even gave Kevin Owens a ride to the ring. What a sweetheart.

Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes got along just fine taking turns beating up Roman Reigns. The two shared an entertaining moment where they each went for the pinfall, and then started throwing hockey punches at one another. This allowed Paul to reenter the match to loud boos and chants of “Logan sucks!”

Kevin Owens hit an impressive running senton in the corner on both Paul and Orton.

Fans chanted for drinks like “Powerade” and “water” to troll Logan Paul.

Kevin Owens hit a beautiful moonsault on Logan Paul, right on the Prime logo, for a nearfall. This was followed by another great nearfall after Paul hit Orton with a pair of brass knuckles.

Orton prepared to punt Paul in the head, and the mascot saved Paul before revealing himself to be rapper I Show Speed. Orton finished I Show Speed off with an RKO on the table. The table didn’t break, leading to chants of “one more time!”

The finishing sequence was awesome. Owens tried for a Pop-up Power Bomb on Orton, which was countered by an RKO. Paul tried to throw Orton out of the ring, which was countered by Orton—but then Paul countered the counter—tossed Orton out and hit a Frog Splash on Owens for the win.

Kevin Owens vs. Logan Paul and Randy Orton Grade: A

Bayley Def. Iyo Sky

Bayley’s entrance was inspired by the Sphinx and Triple H’s WrestleMania 30 entrance.

Bayley used new thee music which was as good as her previous music. I miss babyface Bayley’s theme music.

Iyo Sky’s entrance included Damage CTRL and then we were off to the races. Fans were massively behind Bayley, who received familiar “hey Bayley” chants.

There was a fantastic spot where Iyo Sky performed a double-jump dropkick on Bayley to knock her off the top rope.

Bayley and Iyo jockeyed for position and must have rotated—do-si-do style—at least four times. This led to Bayley hitting a sunset flip powerbomb on Iyo in the corner.

This turned into a Bret vs. Owen-like technical wrestling classic for the final few minutes as the pace quickened and the crowd rallied behind Bayley.

Bayley won her first-ever singles match at WrestleMania with a Bayley-to-Belly followed by a Roseplant.

Bayley vs. Iyo Sky Grade: B

Cody Rhodes Vs. Roman Reigns

Cody Rhodes had a fantastic entrance where he donned an American Nightmare mask. He was accompanied by Brandi Rhodes. Reigns kissed the mat, but made sure his lips didn’t touch the Prime logo.

Roman Reigns had a superstar entrance of course, in what may be his final entrance of this reign.

After Rhodes’ win WWE Superstars (including CM Punk and Randy Orton) and Rhodes’ family celebrated with the new king of WWE. Rhodes thanked Bruce Prichard and Triple H, both of whom appeared live.

Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes Grade: A+
