WrestleMania 40 Results: Here’s Who Won on Night 1 of the WWE Spectacle (2024)

WrestleMania 40, taking place Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7 at Lincoln Financial Field, marks the second time the premium live event went underway in Philadelphia, Pa. Fans will recall that WrestleMania 15, which saw The Rock (c) take on “Stone Cold” Steve Austin for the WWF Championship in the main event, also took place in the northeastern city back in 1999.

Grammy-winning artist and Bel-Air star Coco Jones kicked off Night 1 with a moving rendition of the national anthem and Paul “Triple H” Levesque then officially opened the event.

There were several big matches on the card for Night 1, including Jimmy Uso taking on his twin brother Jey in a solo bout that aimed to settle the score. Meanwhile, Bianca Belair, Naomi and Jade Cargill (who makes her WrestleMania debut) teamed up to face Damage CTRL; Intercontinental Champion Gunther defended his title against Sami Zayn; and Rey Mysterio and Andrade fought Santos Escobar and “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio in tag team competition.

Speaking of, the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship was on the line in a Six-Pack Tag Team Ladder Match featuring defending champs The Judgment Day, The Awesome Truth, The New Day, #DIY, New Catch Republic and A-Town Down Under.

Additionally, Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley defended her title against Becky Lynch after months of back-and-forth between the two. In the main event, Cody Rhodes and Seth “Freakin” Rollins squared off against Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Roman Reigns to determine the rules for Reigns’ title match against Rhodes on Sunday.

Read on below for the results from WrestleMania Night 1, which will be updated in real time. Don’t forget to add your commentary below!

  • Women's World Championship: Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Becky Lynch

WrestleMania 40 Results: Here’s Who Won on Night 1 of the WWE Spectacle (1)

Kicking off the night, Becky Lynch made her not-so-average entrance in a floor-length red and white coat along with a mean mug that meant business. Not to be outdone, Rhea Ripley enlisted Motionless in White to perform her theme live, hamming it up with lead singer Chris “Motionless” Cerulli before focusing on defending her title.

This match kept us on our toes with a series of nearfalls as both women beat the hell out of each other for the Women’s World Championship.

Highlights include Rhea attempting to pay homage to Eddie Guerrero with a leap off the top rope, only for Becky to bring her down with a strong arm drag to disrupt the champion’s momentum. Becky took full advantage, planting Rhea to the mat with a tornado DDT and going for the pin. But Rhea kicked out!

Things picked up as they exchanged blows. But then Rhea dove shoulder first — with her bad arm, mind you —into the ring post and went down. However, one missed move from Becky and Rhea was right back in control, ensnaring Becky in the Prism Trap in the middle of the ring. Becky then countered Rhea’s Riptide with a Manhandle Slam for a nearfall, and Rhea connected with a Riptide for another near win!

After more back-and-forths, Rhea secured the win by tossing Becky against the rope and then hitting the Riptide to retain.

    Winner: Rhea Ripley

  • Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship Six-Pack Tag Team Ladder Match: The Judgment Day (c) vs. The Awesome Truth vs. The New Day vs. #DIY vs. New Catch Republic vs. A-Town Down Under

WrestleMania 40 Results: Here’s Who Won on Night 1 of the WWE Spectacle (2)

Before the match, announcer Samantha Irvin reminded everyone that tonight’s bout would only end when both sets of tag team titles were retrieved from above the ring.

As one would imagine, six teams fighting at once was pure chaos. Immediately, three ladders were set up underneath both sets of titles, and every single participant climbed to the top with the hopes of getting an early win. But just as quickly as they went up, they all came crashing down.

There were several bright spots, like New Catch Republic’s Tyler Bate putting Judgement Day’s Finn Bàlor in an airplane spin along with a ladder, catching New Day’s Kofi Kingston in the crossfire. Plus, R-Truth had the crowd eating out of his hands while paying homage to John Cena and hitting Bàlor with the Five Knuckle Shuffle. He event counted his own pin, though that wasn’t how this match is won, which a baffled Miz pointed out.

We especially loved Awesome Truth and #DIY working together to secure respective wins. But that plan was quickly thwarted by A-Town Down Under’s Grayson Waller and Austin Theory, who nabbed the SmackDown Tag Team titles. That left just the Raw Tag Team Championship up for grabs.

Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston were so close to the remaining title, but Kingston risked it all with a trust fall on a cluster of wrestlers outside of the ring. There were more close calls —Theory almost grabbed the second titles — but it was R-Truth who successfully climbed the ladder and secured Awesome Truth’s first-ever Raw Tag Team Championship win.

Winners: A-Town Down Under (SmackDown Tag Team Championship) and Awesome Truth (Raw Tag Team Championship)

  • Rey Mysterio and Andrade vs. Santos Escobar and "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio

WrestleMania 40 Results: Here’s Who Won on Night 1 of the WWE Spectacle (3)

This match marked Santos Escobar’s first WrestleMania appearance and it was a delight. Early in the fight, Rey Mysterio climbed onto Andrade’s shoulders to pull off a crowd pleasing, two-person (!!!) crossbody from the second rope to the outside. Plus, Escobar and Dirty Dom were quite a pair, delivering matching kicks to the back of Mysterio’s head.

Andrade was impressive catching Dom in the corner with double knees. He then missed with his first moonsault but quickly adjusted and connected with a second attempt. Zelina Vega also got in on the action, hitting her own moonsault from the second rope.

All hell broke loose when two masked men attacked Dom on the outside of the ring. The distraction helped Mysterio hit his signature 619 and then a frogsplash from the top rope to secure the pin.

But who were the masked men? None other than recently retired Jason Kelce and current offensive tackle Lane Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles.

  • Jey Uso vs. Jimmy Uso

WrestleMania 40 Results: Here’s Who Won on Night 1 of the WWE Spectacle (6)

Jey Uso enlisted rapper Lil Wayne to perform “A Milli” live for his big WrestleMania entrance. The festivities, however, ended there.

He wasted no time in tackling his twin brother Jimmy before the latter even reached the steps to get in the ring. This kicked off a heated match between the former tag team partners, with both men exchanging blows as the crowd matched each of Jey’s hits with a “Yeet” chant.

Deep into the fight, Jey showed compassion to his brother and backed off from his signature kick to the face. Jimmy then extended a hand and begged for forgiveness, only to betray his bother once more by breaking up their long-awaited embrace with a kick of his own. He then hit a frogsplash off the top rope and nearly got the pin before Jey kicked out.

Jey regained control with a spear followed by a frogsplash from the top rope, getting the pin on his brother.

    Winner: Jey Uso

  • Six-Woman Tag Team Match: Bianca Belair, Jade Cargill and Naomi vs. Damage CTRL

WrestleMania 40 Results: Here’s Who Won on Night 1 of the WWE Spectacle (7)

Arguably one of the most anticipated matches of the night, it certainly delivered! This also marked new WWE recruit Jade Cargill’s WrestleMania debut, and she looked comfortable in the ring mixing it up with five other women.

Asuka felt Naomi’s glow early on, receiving some harsh kicks and nearly getting pinned. The momentum shifted when Damage CTRL got their licks in, but the tide again turned when Bianca Belair joined the action. The crowd was all in as she tossed all three members of Damage CTRL like rag dolls and almost pinned them at the same time. Kairi Sane then yanked on Bianca’s braid to prevent her from tagging Cargill in, much to the crowd’s dismay. Chants for Cargill filled the air as Asuka tagged herself in.

The vibe change was palpable when Cargill finally entered the match. She delivered a strong chokeslam and then caught Sane off the top rope before discarding her like old trash. Cargill then dropped Dakota Kai like a sack of potatoes and almost got the pin before other members of Damage CTRL broke up the count.

In the end, Naomi took out Sane, Belair smacked the skin off Asuka with her braid, and Cargill finished Kai off to get the win.

Winners: Jade Cargill, Bianca Belair and Naomi

  • Intercontinental Championship: Gunther (c) vs. Sami Zayn

WrestleMania 40 Results: Here’s Who Won on Night 1 of the WWE Spectacle (8)

Sami Zayn kicked things off with an onslaught of chops to Gunther’s chest, followed by a series of punches to back the champion in the corner. Gunther countered with a German suplex to snatch the wind out of Zayn’s lungs.

If there’s one thing we’re happy to never experience, it’s a chop from Gunther because the man is brutal. Zayn’s bright red chest is evidence of that.

Major props to Zayn for fighting back and keeping things evenly matched. He later went for the Helluva Kick, but Gunther countered with a dropkick followed by a powerbomb, only for Zayn to kick out! But Zayn pulled a Helluva Kick out of nowhere and got his own nearfall.

We were biting our nails as Gunther clotheslined Zayn and delivered back-to-back powerbombs for the win — but Zayn again kicked out! Even the crowd couldn’t believe it. Someone certainly had their Wheaties today.

Gunther, however, remained in control of the match and taunted with Zayn with multiple splashes from the top rope. But you can’t keep Zayn down! The red-haired wrestler rallied to deliver a Helluva kick and then a brainbuster (!!!) from the top rope. He followed that up with another Helluva Kick — the crowd absolutely losing it — and the pin to get the win. For the fourth time in his career, Zayn is the Intercontinental Champion.

    Winner: Sami Zayn

  • Main Event: Cody Rhodes and Seth "Freakin" Rollins vs. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Roman Reigns

WrestleMania 40 Results: Here’s Who Won on Night 1 of the WWE Spectacle (9)

With the outcome of this match set to determine whether Cody Rhodes will have an even playing field in his one-on-one bout against Roman Reigns on Sunday for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, the stakes couldn’t have been higher.

Reigns and Seth Rollins kicked things off but it didn’t take long for Rhodes and Rock to tag in.The fight eventually spilled over to the outside, with Rollins and Rock duking it out ringside while Reigns and Rollins battled up the ramp towards the entrance. If you’re wondering why no one was counted out, Rock threatened to fire the referee if he began counting.

At one point, Rock and Reigns took turns beating the bleach out of Rollins’ hair, and the World Heavyweight Champion could barely stand. This man still has to defend his title against Drew McIntyre tomorrow!

The Rock then attempted the People’s Elbow, and Rhodes countered with the Cody Cutter. But as Rhodes was screaming at Rock, who had taunted his mother with the wrestling belt, Reigns caught him with the Superman punch. Reigns went to spear Rhodes, but Rollins moved Rhodes out of the way, and Reigns wound up spearing his tag team partner instead.

This shifted the dynamic of the match, with Rollins and Rhodes delivering double Pedigrees on Rock and Reigns and taking control. Seth then climbed the top rope for a crossbody on Reigns. Rhodes and Rock, meanwhile, duked it out in front of the announce table. Rhodes countered Rock’s signature Rock Bottom with one of his own through the announce table, and Reigns speared Rollins through the barricade. Bodies lying everywhere!

When things picked back up, Rhodes delivered back-to-back Cross Rhodes on Reigns, but Rock caught him in the back with his wrestling belt, allowing Reigns to then connect with a spear. Rock tagged himself in as the legal man, catching Rhodes with a Rock Bottom and finishing him off with The People’s Elbow.

Rock got the pin on Rhodes, giving The Bloodline the upper hand tomorrow —anything goes —and sucking the energy out of the arena.

Winners: The Rock and Roman Reigns
