With Valentine’s Day coming up, I’m seeing so many adorable Valentine’s Day pictures and “shoutouts to the person I love” posts. It’s everywhere I look on social media, including Instagram and TikTok! It’s so cute. Sometimes though, when you’re in a relationship, asking someone to be your valentine is something that can go straight over your head. The automatic assumption is that if you’re dating, then obviously you’re each other’s valentines. For many people, that assumption is enough. I also know so many people who just don’t do the big Valentine’s Day thing, which is perfectly fine. Every decision you make as a couple is based on your preference, but sometimes some things, like asking someone to be your valentine, just takes your relationship to a different level.
In my opinion, asking someone to be your valentine is one of those little extra things someone can do. Valentine’s Day is a day meant to show someone how much you love and care about them, and a great way to show that you care for someone is to go above and beyond. Going out of your way to ask someone to be your valentine, even if the answer could be assumed, is a great way to go beyond the minimum to show someone just how much you care about them. Also, it’s just kind of adorable to know that someone thought about how to ask you and decided that they wanted to ask you. Basically every girl I’ve ever talked to about this would love for someone to ask them, so no matter the relationship status, it makes people so happy to be asked to be someone’s valentine. (This sentence seemed really off so I did some extra editing)
I think asking someone to be your valentine is especially important if your relationship is still new. When you’re still in those beginning stages of a relationship, those little things people do are so important as they set the standards for your relationship going forward. Thinking about asking the person and being vulnerable toward them helps create a strong basis for your new relationship. It shows that this person means something big to you and that you really want to keep them in your life. It can also be an adorable way to solidify your relationship. Asking someone to be your valentine can be a great way to ask someone out, get out of the talking stage and officially be boy/girlfriend.
Although it’s not a requirement, asking someone to be your valentine, whether you’re in a relationship or not, is a great idea. It would truly make someone’s day and is just a little something extra to show just how much you care.
