Why can't BYU play on Sunday? ›

Then, of course, there's BYU's no-Sunday play policy due to its affiliation with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The BYU Cougars are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Brigham Young University (BYU), located in Provo, Utah. BYU fields 21 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) varsity athletic teams.

“It's a religious thing. I believe in keeping the Sabbath day holy and part of that is not playing sports on Sunday,” I responded, feeling a little awkward with the situation. “o*kay, well listen. I would still love to have you for the other games—that is if you still want to play,” he said with a smile.

For more than 30 years, the NCAA has honored the beliefs of those schools with policies prohibiting Sunday play.

The Cougars have had NCAA baseball tournaments rested in 1994 and 1979 because of the school's policy to not play on Sunday.
