And while you can use a pen and paper to put everything together, you might find that using a web program will help you keep everything more organized.
These days, you will find several tools to help you achieve what you want. Canva is one of the most popular, and it’s also one of the most dynamic. In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about using your Canva whiteboard to brainstorm ideas.
Do You Need Canva Pro to Use the Whiteboard?
No—you don’t need to have a paid subscription to use Canva’s whiteboard feature. If you’re on a free plan, you will find several customizable templates. And if you want to start from scratch, you will also have the option to do that.
But while you can use the free version of Canva to create your brainstorm whiteboard, a paid subscription has its benefits. For example, you will find a larger number of templates that you can use and customize.
What Devices Can You Use the Canva Whiteboard On?
The features that we mention in this article are all available on the Canva web app. And if you download the platform for your computer, you will similarly find everything you need there.
If you don’t want to use your desktop or laptop device, you can also brainstorm with the Canva whiteboard on your smartphone or tablet. Apple and Google’s official app stores both have the Canva app, and downloading it is free.

Now that you know where you can use a Canva whiteboard and whether you need a paid subscription to do so, we can move on and show you how to create a brainstorm. In this example, we will show you the processes of brainstorming for a creative endeavor you might consider.
Choosing Your Whiteboard Template
Once you’ve decided on the topic you want to brainstorm about, you’ll want to choose a template on Canva. Doing so is simple; first, you’ll need to sign into your account.
When you have logged into your Canva account, the easiest way to find a whiteboard is to type the word into the search bar. Sometimes, you’ll see a suggestion to try it—but you’ll have to spend more time clicking if you’re looking for a whiteboard that’s specific for brainstorming.
After typing “whiteboard” in the search bar, click on the Brainstorm Whiteboard option. You will see a wide selection of templates to choose from, and you can also create your own. In our example, we will use “My Project Journey”.
Customizing Elements of Your Whiteboard
Once you’ve chosen your template, you will find yourself on the main editing tab. You can alter several sections, along with adding and removing elements. We’ll cover some of the most important functions in the subsections below.
1. Choose Colors
If you don’t like the colors on your template, you can easily change these. When you click on an element, you will see a square toward the top of your window. Select this, and a menu will appear. Here, you can choose whatever color you want.
Once you’ve changed the color, you might decide that you’d like to switch back to what you had before. If that’s the case, you can always click on the Undo icon. Alternatively, you can press CTRL + Z or Command + Z simultaneously.
You can also change the color of the text on your Canva template. To do this, select the text you’d like to alter—and select the A icon with lots of colors beneath it.
2. Customize Fonts
In some cases, you might decide that you want to change the font for the text on your Canva whiteboard. If so, you can easily do this by clicking on the text box that you want to change.
Once you’ve selected the text box (or highlighted the words), you will see a dropdown menu with the current font. Expand this, and you will see all your options. If you want to edit the size, you can click on the number next to it and pick whatever you want.
3. Adding Images and Elements
Besides convenience, you probably chose to brainstorm your ideas on Canva to make it look good. And regardless of whether you want to add images or elements, doing so doesn’t take too long. Moreover, you’ll find plenty of options for both.
To add elements to your whiteboard, click on the Elements panel. Here, you’ll find a dedicated section for whiteboard graphics. But you can also add plenty of other aspects, such as lines, charts, and frames.
When using Canva, you will find a wide selection of pictures already available for use. You can also add videos to your project. However, you can also upload your own. To do so, select the Uploads option. Click on Upload files and choose the ones you wish to add to your project. Once you see them in the bar underneath, you can drag and drop them to your whiteboard as you please.
Bringing Your Ideas to Life
Once you’ve added your elements and whatnot, it’s time to bring your brainstorm to life. Doing so is pretty simple; all you need to do is drag and drop your elements and text where you want it to feature.
When your elements are in place, you can start adding the text. If you need to add new text boxes, you might find it easier to copy and paste—and simply delete the text in the pasted one.
Exporting Your Project
Once you’ve edited everything, you can easily export your brainstorm from Canva to your computer, smartphone, or tablet. Select the Share option in the top right-hand corner of your screen.
If you want to download your project, click on the Download tab. You can then decide on the file type (e.g., PNG) and determine the size you want. Moreover, you can adjust the transparency. Hit the Download button when you’ve finished editing your export preferences.
