Flexi Says:
Decimals and fractions both represent quantities that are part of a whole.
Steps to Convert Fraction to Decimal - Method 1
To write fractions that have denominators other than 10, 100, 1000 and so on into decimals, we follow the following steps:
Step 1: Obtain the fraction and convert it into an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 10, 100, 1000, or any power of 10. Note that this may not be possible for all denominators.
Step 2: Then write the equivalent fraction as a decimal.
To convert @$\begin{align*}\frac{5}{8}\end{align*}@$ into a decimal, first find an equivalent fraction of @$\begin{align*}\frac{5}{8}\end{align*}@$ with a denominator of 1000.
@$$\begin{align*}\frac{5}{8}=\frac {5\times 125}{8\times 125}=\frac{625}{1000}\end{align*}@$$
Then, convert the fraction to a decimal. @$\begin{align*}\frac{625}{1000}\end{align*}@$ is also 625 thousandths.
@$$\begin{align*}\frac{625}{1000}=0.625\end{align*}@$$
Therefore, the decimal value of @$\begin{align*}\frac{5}{8}\end{align*}@$ is 0.625.
Now, add the whole number 1 to the decimal that we found above.
@$$\begin{align*} 1 + 0.625 = 1.625\end{align*}@$$
So, @$\begin{align*}1 \frac{5}{8}\end{align*}@$ = 1.625 in decimal form.
Steps to Convert Fraction to Decimal - Method 2
The other way is to use division. Divide 5 by 8. Use zero placeholders if needed.
@$$\begin{align*}\begin{array}{rcl}&&\overset{ \quad \large{0.625}}{8 \overline{ ) {5.0 \;}}}\\&& \phantom{0} \underline{-48}\\&& \phantom{0000} 20 \\&& \phantom{000} \underline{-16} \\&& \phantom{1000} \ \ 40 \\&& \phantom{1000} \underline{-40} \\&& \phantom{100000} 0\end{array}\end{align*}@$$
The decimal value of @$\begin{align*}\frac{5}{8}\end{align*}@$ is 0.625.
Now, add the whole number 1 to the decimal that we found above.
@$$\begin{align*} 1 + 0.625 = 1.625\end{align*}@$$
So, @$\begin{align*}1 \frac{5}{8}\end{align*}@$ = 1.625 in decimal form.
