Essential Oils Cleaning Tips and Recipes (2024)

Whether you are spring cleaning or just doing a deep clean on your home, using natural cleaners is the best way to have a clean, happy and healthy home! Here are my best essential oils cleaning recipes, all in one place!

Before you grab your bottles of cleaners that you bought at the grocery store, stop. Maybe this year you can use something safer and just as, if not more so, effective.

I’m talking essential oils. Yes, you can use essential oils to effectively clean your home. You probably know that many essential oils are antibacterial, antiviral and antimicrobial (tea tree anyone?), so they’re the perfect choice to clean your whole house.

Many essential oils will kill the bacteria that causes stinky rooms more safely than room sprays. Another great reason to use oils is that they have the ability to support us both physically and emotionally.

Here’s the best part: When you are scrubbing with them you won’t have burning lungs. Instead you may just feel like your head is clearer and you are more balanced.

This is super important to me because I am allergic to almost everything and a day spent cleaning with bleach and other harsh chemicals can take me down for a week!

So here are some great recipes to use to clean around the house.

Essential Oils Carpet Cleaning Powder Recipe

Many people ask, “how do I deodorize my carpets with essential oils?”

Take a container with a shaker lid and add a cup of baking soda. Then add 10-15 drops of the essential oil of your choice. Shake well, then add another cup of baking soda and 10-15 more drops of oil and shake well again. To use it, sprinkle on your carpets and let it sit for a half an hour to an hour then vacuum it up.

Essential Oils Carpet Spot Spray Cleaner

If you have stains to remove from carpet, try this spray cleaner (be sure to test a small inauspicious spot to check that it won’t harm the carpet or color):

Mix a cup of white vinegar, a copy of hot water, 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 20 drops of lemon essential oil in a spray bottle and shake well. Make sure all of the baking soda has dissolved. Then spray on the carpet and work it in with a brush or a towel. Use the towel to soak up extra liquid.

Essential Oils Kitchen Drain Refresher Disks

First, make the disks by 1-1/3 cups baking soda, ½ cup of water, ½ cup vinegar and mix into a thick paste. Put into a silicone mold and back at 200 degrees for 30 minutes. Turn off the oven, but leave the molds in the oven to cool. Leave in the mold for 24 hours.

Remove from the mold and put into an airtight container. When you are ready to use one, take out of the container and add 5-8 drops of your choice of essential oil. Put it in the drain and add ½ cup of vinegar and allow it to foam. If you have a garbage disposal, run it.

Mix all the ingredients to make a paste. Spread the paste on the area to be cleaned and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Then scrub and rinse.

Essential Oils Air Fresheners

Instead of using the Glade® room air refreshers (the plug in kind can be dangerous and have set homes on fire) try one of these:

Mason Jar Room Freshener

In a mason jar mix ½ cup of baking soda with 20-30 drops of the essential oil of your choice. Put a coffee filter or piece of light fabric over the top and screw on the ring (without the separate lid disc) and shake when needed to renew the scent.

Gelatin Air Freshener

In a small sauce pan, bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Add 1 ounce of powdered gelatin and whisk until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Add 1 tablespoon of salt and a second cup of water, whisk and set it aside. In a glass jar add 20-30 drops of the essential oil of your choice and, if you want food coloring, and pour in the gelatin mixture and stir. Allow to cool and enjoy!

Hydrosol Room Spray

Hydrosol is the water left after the distillation process. They smell wonderful and can be used to make a great room spray. To make a room spray, take a dark glass spray bottle and fill with the hydrosol of your choice. Spray and enjoy!

Essential Oils Furniture Cleaner and Polish

With winter being so drying, your furniture needs a good cleaning and moisturizing too. Here’s a great recipe to use:

Take 1-ounce unrefined solid coconut oil, 12 drops jojoba oil, 4 drops of sweet orange essential oil, 3 drops of lavender essential oil and mix together. Put a small amount on a microfiber cloth and buff your furniture.

Prefer a dusting spray?

In a spray bottle mix 6 drops jojoba oil, 10 drops essential oil of your choice, and 4 ounces of water and shake. Then spray and wipe with a microfiber cloth.

In a glass spray bottle mix 1½ ounces of distilled water, 1 teaspoon of white vinegar, ½ teaspoon of castile soap, 10 drops of lemon essential oil and 10 drops of sweet orange essential oil. Shake well and spray your dish cloth or sponge after each use.
