The advent of endoscopic sinus surgery led to a resurgence of interest in the detailed anatomy of the internal nose and paranasal sinuses. However, the official Terminologica Anatomica used by basic anatomists omits many of the structures of surgical importance. This led to numerous clinical anatomy papers and much discussion about the exact names and definitions for the structures of surgical relevance. This European Position Paper on the Anatomical Terminology of the Internal Nose and Paranasal Sinuses was conceived to re-evaluate the anatomical terms in common usage by endoscopic sinus surgeons and to compare this with the official Terminologica Anatomica. Some anatomical variation of paranasal sinuses using sinus endoscopic approach on "cadaver" in Isfahan, Iran

Due to the anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses and its great importance in sinus surgery, as this area is in very close proximity to vital structures including the optic nerve, carotid artery, and skull base, anatomical knowledge of this area is of high importance. The purpose of this study is defining a full and clear impression of paranasal sinus anatomy and its variations as a model for the human population of the country. This study was conducted on 45 cadavers in Isfahan forensic Medicine center during 2010 to 2011. Nasal and paranasal sinuses endoscopic dissection was done with (zero and 30°) lenses (Olympus). The methods of performed dissection were via the Stamberger technique. This study showed that 88.9% (40 cases) of middle turbinates were in a typical form, while 6.7% (3 cases) were in medial and only 4.4% (2 cases) were in the lateral form. The development of modern surgical methods and techniques for treatment of the diseases of the paranasal sinuses and the edentulous ridge of the maxilla requires detailed knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the maxillary sinus. The sinus dimensions and volume, thickness of the mucosa, height of the inferior wall and presence of septa and root prominence are important indicators for the pneumatization of the maxillary sinus and have essential role by performing sino-nasal and dental implant surgery. The preliminary assessment of some morphological aspects of the maxillary sinus is essential for the proper diagnosis and treatment of a number of diseases in maxillofacial region, including treatment of the chronic rhinosinusitis and the edentulous ridges of the distal maxilla.

Nasal cavity and paranasal sinus bony variations: a computed tomographic study

Variations of the nasal cavity are very important for the otolaryngologist in functional endoscopic sinus surgery. To provide data on bony variations of this region, we performed high resolution computed tomography images of paranasal sinuses on 82 adult patients without sinus pathology and on 90 adult patients with sinus disease. We observed paradoxical curvature of the middle concha in 11 (12.22%) sinus patients and 6 (7.31%) in non-sinus patients. Concha bullosa was observed in 26 sinus patients (28.88%) and 22 (26.83%) in non-sinus patients, deviated nasal septum in 20 (22.22%) sinus and 10 (12%) non-sinus, Haller's cell in 5 (5.55%) sinus and in 3 (3.65%) non-sinus, agger nasi cell in 7 (7.77%) sinus and 4 (4.88%) non-sinus patients. The Anatomical Study of Superior and Middle Turbinates from Endoscopic Perspective

Introduction: Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (ESS) is a well-established tool for examining the nasal cavity and in observing the anatomic details. It is also helps in providing the local and medical therapy of infectious diseases of the paranasal sinuses. However, it requires considerable experience and expertise as many normal variations in the middle meatal anatomy have been reported. Aim: To study the relation between the middle and superior turbinates from the point of view of an endoscopist. Method: The distances and angles between the limen nasi and the anterior attachments of the middle turbinate and superior turbinate were studied in 100 hemisected adult Indian cadaveric heads. Results: The mean angles between the limen nasi and the anterior attachments of the middle turbinate and superior turbinate respectively are a1 is 65.41° and a2 is 42.48°. The mean distance between the lowermost portion of limen nasi and the anterior attachment of middle turbinate and of superior turbinate are d1 is 34.79 + 3.27 mm and d2 is 45.47 + 4.42 mm.
