Creamy and rich, this clean & healthy sweetened condensed milk will replace the bad stuff in all of your sweets and treats recipes!
Clean & Healthy Sweetened Condensed Milk With Coconut Oil
There are so many great ways to use coconut oil…in recipes, oil pulling, skin care and so on.
You reap such wonderful benefits from using coconut oil.
I enjoy reading what Dr. Axe has to say about this awesome product–clickhereto read.
Sneak In That Coconut Oil
I’m going to share yet another way for you to get in your coconut oil.
Because it is so beneficial to our bodies, you should always be looking for ways to get it in.
Enter this sweetened condensed milk!
By adding coconut oil to sweetened condensed milk, you’re getting the benefits of this amazing oil…all while enjoying a sweet treat!
Does It Really Taste Good?
Ummm…let’s just say that you could eat this clean & healthy sweetened condensed milk with a spoon!
It’s creamy, smooth and is the perfect sweetness for your desserts and candies.
Can I Use Low Carb Sweetened Condensed Milk In My Coffee?
You could most certainly use this sweet stuff for your coffee too!
There’s really no limit on what you can do with sweetened condensed milk, right?
Only 3 Ingredients
- half & half
- sweetener
- coconut oil
Why Use Half & Half Instead Of Heavy Cream?
Instead of using heavy cream, you can use full fat half & half.
Doing some figures, it just so happens that you are getting WAY less calories by using half & half instead of heavy cream.
So you will save many calories by just switching this one ingredient!
Vanilla Extract Is Optional
Adding just a tiny bit of vanilla extract will give this sweetened condensed milk a fabulous flavor!
I let my 4 year old lick the spoon after giving it a stir…he jumped up and down with excitement because it was something sweet!
He’s got a big sweet tooth (just like his mother).
I have several recipes that use this .
Here are just a couple!
- Easy Fudge
- Low Carb Pumpkin Ice Cream
What Sweetener Is Best To Use
When it comes to sweetener, feel free to use 1/2 cup of sweetener that is equivalent to 1/2 cup of white sugar.
If you have a granulated sweetener like Swerve or Monkfruit classic, I suggest you grind it into powder.
Why powdered sweetener? Well, as this sweetened condensed milk cools and firms up some in the fridge, it may crystalize if you use a granulated sweetener.
You will get the creamiest condensed milk by using powdered sweetener!
Go Ahead And Make Extra…You’ll Be Glad You Did
This recipe makes approximately 1 cup of sweetened condensed milk.
With the holidays right around the corner, there are tons of sweets just waiting to be eaten…only now you can eat them without all the guilt!
It probably wouldn’t hurt to go ahead and make a double or triple batch of this since it lasts in the fridge for up to two weeks.
It can also be frozen. It thaws out nicely and is just as good in recipes!

Clean & Healthy Sweetened Condensed Milk {THM-S, Sugar Free}
A sugar-free replacement of a favorite ingredient used in fudge, cookies and other yummy recipes!

Print Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups Half & Half
- 1/2 cup low carb sweetener, equivalent to white sugar (I recently used 1/2 cup of this monkfruit blend and love it...just be sure to grind any granulated sweetener into powder for the creamiest condensed milk)*SEE NOTES (you can also use a heaping 1/4 cup of Gentle Sweet)
- 1 Tablespoon refined coconut oil (refined does not have flavor of coconut)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla , optional
Instructions
- Add half & half, sweetener and coconut oil to saucepan.
- Stir and cook over medium heat until mixture comes to a boil.
- Stir often until this mixture reduces to about half and is thicker in consistency. It takes about 40 minutes. Mixture will boil alot, but just keep stirring!
- Add vanilla if using and stir.
Notes
I use Monkfruit classic as my sweetener of choice, but feel free to use xylitol or Gentle Sweet . It just need to be equivalent to 1/2 cup of sugar. *Update > whatever sweetener you use, it's best to grind it to powder or use a powdered sweetener like Gentle Sweet. This helps your sweetened condensed milk not to crystalize when it firms up in the fridge.
This sweetened condensed milk will solidify as it cools. Place in an airtight container or mason jar and store in the fridge, and when ready to use, let it sit out or microwave it for 15 seconds.
You can make this ahead of time if you wish as well as double the batch.

When do you add the sweetener? Not seeing that on the directions.Reply
Rachel on November 14, 2016 at 8:00 pm
You add the sweetener with the half & half and coconut oil in the beginning. I will fix that. Thank you! Reply
Laura on October 21, 2021 at 8:58 pm
Could I use coconut sugar for the sweetener?Reply
Rachel on October 21, 2021 at 9:08 pm
Coconut sugar shouldn't be used too frequently if someone has issues with blood sugar or weight gain. On another note, I personally like to use a powdered sweetener for this recipe...it stays creamy and doesn't get crystalized. Enjoy!Reply
Esme on October 27, 2019 at 7:02 am
I made this and when I wanted to eat it it was hard. Microwave it and nop when bad. What do I do?Reply
Rachel on October 27, 2019 at 7:05 am
It will harden as it cools in the fridge. To get that creamy texture, I like to melt it on the stovetop. Microwave will work too, but not for too long. If you're using granulated sweetener, it may crystallize...that's why it's best on stovetop to get it all melted slowly. Hope it works for you!Reply
Molly on December 4, 2021 at 11:36 am
What about using Allulose sweetener?Reply
Kathy Lotter on November 14, 2016 at 9:18 pm
Hello..... I am enjoying your posts. In this recipe in the Notes at the bottom you say that the sweetener just needs to equal 1/2 sugar...did you mean 1/2 cup sugar??Thank YouReply
Rachel on November 14, 2016 at 9:20 pm
Yes 1/2 cup of sugar is correct!Reply
Ashley on November 15, 2016 at 12:40 am
That's so neat! I've thought about finding a substitute for sweetened condensed milk. Thanks for sharing! :)Reply
Shirley on November 15, 2016 at 10:33 pm
Must make this!!Reply

Rachel, I made this the other day and Oh MY Goodness.......it is wonderful. Used it to make THM chocolate candy. DELICIOUS. Thanks so much for sharing. Blessings to you. PS I am looking for a THM on plan recipe for pecan pie for Thanksgiving......any suggestions? :)Reply

Hey I love this recipe however I dont have an instant pot I cooked it on the stove and it doesn't look at thick but does tast amazing any suggestions?? ThanksReply
Rachel on May 14, 2019 at 3:53 pm
It will be more liquidy after cooking. Once stored in the fridge for a day, it will thicken up. It's not supposed to get super thick. It should resemble the store bought sweetened condensed milk.Reply
Nichole Woodard on October 29, 2019 at 1:08 pm
I'm not seeing instruction for cooking in the instant pot. Did I miss something?
Rachel on October 29, 2019 at 1:11 pm
I actually took it off my page for now. It's much easier and faster for me to make it on stovetop. I'll experiment with the IP again and probably have instructions for it in the future. Sorry about that.
Juliana Arana on October 5, 2019 at 11:34 am
Hi was wondering about 2 things: would it work if I use swerve confectioners sweetener (powdered sweetener) or is a granular one preferred? And second, could this recipe also make dulce de leche? Thanks in advance :)Reply
Rachel on October 5, 2019 at 11:43 am
Yes you can absolutely use powdered sweetener! I've heard that if you continue to cook it, it will eventually turn to dulce de leche. I haven't tried it personally, but it sounds fabulous!!Reply
Cheryl on November 19, 2016 at 4:30 pm
Is half and half still on plan at 2 cups? There is 1 gram of sugar per Tablespoon of half and half. It has less junk in it than whipping cream so I would rather use it, but wouldn't that be too much sugar in the half and half? Thanks!Reply
Rachel on November 19, 2016 at 4:34 pm
The sugar naturally occurs in the dairy. And whatever the recipe is, I wouldn't be eating too much of it at one time anyhow...Hope this helps :)Reply
Cheryl on November 19, 2016 at 4:39 pm
I appreciate that. I know that milk is not allowable on the THM plan because of the sugar. Heavy wipping cream doesn't have any sugar in it. I was mainly wondering if this is allowable according to plan. Thanks so much for your help!Reply
Marilyn on November 19, 2016 at 4:48 pm
Do you turn the heat down when it starts to boil?Reply
Rachel on November 19, 2016 at 4:51 pm
Just slightly. I like to use an extra big saucepan so it doesn't boil over. Use your judgement and turn the heat down more if needed. Reply
Linda on November 24, 2016 at 10:05 am
Just started lchf. What is Thm s.Reply
Rachel on November 24, 2016 at 10:15 am
THM stands for Trim Healthy Mama. It's a healthy lifestyle that doesn't use processed sugar, flour, etc. The S stands for satisfying in the THM world :) That just means it's higher in good fats and low carb. There are two sisters who wrote a book called trim healthy mama. It will help you understand this lifestyle much better than I can explain! :)Reply
Patti on November 27, 2016 at 11:41 pm
Is 1/4 cup of THM Super Sweet equivalent to 1/2 cup of sugar?Reply
Rachel on November 28, 2016 at 7:07 am
That's what I normally do!Reply
Kendra Peterson on January 20, 2020 at 10:45 am
You are a genius!!! I started making my own yogurt so I can control the sugars. I just add 1/2 tsp. of Agave when ready to eat. Some have used SCM which is not a good idea with being diabetic. This would be amazing, do you think it would work? I do the yogurt in the instant pot, cold method.Reply
Rachel on January 20, 2020 at 10:49 am
Yes...Absolutely!! I make yogurt in my IP as well and have been wanting to add my homemade sweetened condensed milk right to the pot before it "cooks". I'm positive it would be delicious!! Reply
Kendra Peterson on January 24, 2020 at 11:05 am
I'm gonna do it this weekendReply
Amy on November 28, 2016 at 4:29 pm
Can you use liquid coconut oil or have to use the solid?Reply
Rachel on November 28, 2016 at 4:31 pm
The solid will help keep a good texture if making cookies or fudge. You could try liquid and let me know how it works.Reply
Sydney Ramirez on November 29, 2016 at 8:15 am
I'm excited to try this one too! I love the one with heavy cream & butter. I made pumpkin pie with it and it turned out wonderfully!Reply
Laura Gay on December 5, 2016 at 10:23 pm
Do you think using unrefined coconut oil would add much taste? And did you use the solid oil or liquid?Reply
Rachel on December 5, 2016 at 10:28 pm
I always use refined coconut oil so I don't get the coconut flavor in my sweetened condensed milk. Using unrefined may add a bit of a coconut taste. The coconut oil I use is solid.Reply
Karen on August 22, 2019 at 6:11 pm
Have you tried using the buttery coconut oil in this recipe?Reply
Rachel on August 22, 2019 at 6:18 pm
Not yet. I actually thought of using it today, but I just made the original. If you try it, let me know how it is!Reply

How long will the finished product keep in the refrigerator?Reply
Rachel on August 23, 2019 at 7:25 am
Probably 1-2 weeks. If I know I'm not going to be using it within a week or two, I freeze it. Works fine.Reply
Barbara Ludowese on August 23, 2019 at 11:55 am
What is considered a 30 calorie serving? ie: tsp, tbsp?Reply
Rachel on August 23, 2019 at 12:41 pm
In my recipe I uses half & half so the calories wouldn't be as high as those recipes that use heavy cream. 1 Tablespoon of my clean & healthy sweetened condensed milk is about 48 calories. So a little less would make 30 calories. Hope this helps!Reply
Ginny on August 25, 2019 at 2:54 pm
Is there a non Dairy alternative ?Maybe almond milk?Reply
Rachel on August 25, 2019 at 3:09 pm
I've used almond milk instead of half & half, but it's been a while. I remember it tasting good, but it may have taken longer to condense. Let me know if you try it. Reply
Sharon on August 26, 2019 at 9:26 pm
It's amazing how good this is with coconut oil and not butter! I really loved it! The flavor is so yummy!Reply
Rachel on August 26, 2019 at 9:37 pm
Yes, it's just as creamy and delicious as the canned stuff...even better! :)Reply
Kathy on November 3, 2019 at 3:08 pm
Did I read somewhere that you made this in an Instant Pot? If so, could you please post the instructions for that? Thanks. Loving your recipes.Reply
Rachel on November 4, 2019 at 2:11 pm
Thanks for your comment! I just took it off my blog recently because it was taking just as long if not a bit longer than the stovetop way. If I cook it in the Instant Pot soon, I'll see if there's a way to shorten the time. But stovetop has been working wonderful for me recently. Hope you love the sweetened condensed milk! Reply

How long does this last in the fridge?Reply
Rachel on December 31, 2019 at 7:25 pm
I've had mine in a Mason jar for a couple weeks and it's been fine. I've also frozen it if it won't be used for a while. Reply

Whitlee on August 3, 2020 at 10:25 am
Has anyone tried to can this? Or would it end up just making dulce de leche? I’m interested in making several batches now before fall just to have it on hand for the holidays.Reply
Rachel on August 3, 2020 at 10:30 am
I don't know about canning it, but it does work well to freeze! Reply
Jocelyn McCoy on August 19, 2020 at 10:47 am
Could I use Swerve or honey instead?Reply
Rachel on August 19, 2020 at 10:49 am
Swerve would be fine. I would use the powdered version so you end up with a smooth texture! 1/2 cup would work.Reply
Susan J on April 2, 2021 at 7:08 pm
I am wondering if I could cut the sweetness down? Me and the hubs are not big on overly sweet desserts and when I’ve done no churn ice cream it’s way too sweet.Reply
Rachel on April 2, 2021 at 8:02 pm
Sure, you could use less sweetener in the condensed milk!Reply
Susan on April 2, 2021 at 9:56 pm
My sweetened condensed milk crystallized in the fridge. I wanted to make the fudge so I heated it on the stove before I added the choc chips. It was smooth again but after I added the choc it crystallized again. My fudge is very grainy! Any idea what I did wrong. I used the monk fruit blend that you said in recipe notes that it worked great.Reply
Rachel on April 2, 2021 at 9:59 pm
I'm not for sure what happened. Next time you could definitely grind your sweetener to make sure it turns out smooth! Reply
Susan on April 18, 2021 at 8:31 pm
Thank you I'll try it againReply
Jami Salters on April 28, 2021 at 11:04 pm
Is there a way to make it harden up as to use it for covered strawberries?Reply
Rachel on April 28, 2021 at 11:12 pm
It does harden up some when it's refrigerated. I don't know if it would be firm enough for what you want, but it's worth a try!Reply
Heatherly Bontrager on October 29, 2021 at 8:07 am
I make a recipe where you boil sweetened condensed milk in a can. Then, you slice the SC milk into slices and place them on top of pineapple rings. You top it with whipped cream and a cherry. Is it possible to boil this mixture in a jar to get the same solidifying result? You said it hardens up after it cools--would it be solid enough for this recipe?Reply
Rachel on October 29, 2021 at 9:18 am
Hi Heatherly! That sounds delicious, though I don't believe it would work with my homemade sweetened condensed milk. It will firm up a but when in the fridge, but still be scoopable, if you know what I mean. If I were you, I'd still add a dollop to your pineapple because it would still taste lovely!Reply
Heatherly Bontrager on October 29, 2021 at 1:44 pm
Thank you for your response! Yes, I may just cube the pineapple up, add a dollop of this, some SF whipped cream, and a cherry! It will be the same flavors but a lot less sugar! :)Reply
Bobbi Bryant on November 16, 2021 at 6:09 pm
Can I use heavy whipping creamReply
Rachel on November 16, 2021 at 6:41 pm
Sure! It will be higher in calories, but it does work well too.Reply
Leona Boswell Pardo on January 6, 2022 at 8:03 am
what about using Coconut Cream?Reply
Rachel on January 6, 2022 at 8:26 am
That would probably work...then it would be dairy free!Reply
Cort on February 1, 2022 at 1:55 pm
Could maple syrup be used as a sweetener? I want to make this as a sweetener for homemade yogurt for my kids. I need a few more kid friendly sugar substitute ideas pleaseReply
Rachel on February 1, 2022 at 2:44 pm
Absolutely! That's exactly what I do when a recipe calls for maple syrup as the sweetener. I use this homemade, low carb version and it works!Reply
Debbie on April 13, 2022 at 12:38 pm
Does the recipe equal 1can of store brought sweetened condensed milk?Reply
Rachel on April 13, 2022 at 12:43 pm
My recipe makes about 1 cup of sweetened condensed milk. I’m not too sure how much is in a can of store bought. It may be close to the same amount but I have not measured the canned version.Reply
Diane on June 30, 2022 at 2:48 pm
