Versatile as they are, typical SUVs aren't for everyone. Their boxy design helps maximize interior and cargo space, the cornerstones of an SUV's versatility, but often falls short on style and expression. Coupe-style SUVs with sloping, teardrop-style rooflines offer an alternative. A good example of such a vehicle is the 2024 BMW X4.
The X4 is based on the more familiar BMW X3, a stylish but conventional SUV shape. The X4 is more reminiscent of sporty fastback styles of the 1960s and 1970s, but with the utility that today's SUV buyers need. The distinctive look requires a sacrifice, though. Compared to the X3, the X4 has less front and rear headroom (down by about 1.5 inches) and approximately 1 inch less rear legroom. It also offers substantially less cargo space — 10 cubic feet less — than the X3. The X4 also commands a hefty premium compared to the X3.
For many buyers, the compromise and cost will be worth it. The X4's tapered rear and tall deck give it a striking look. And it shares just about everything else with the X3: robust power, quick and responsive handling, luxurious interior, and state-of-the-art tech.
If it suits you, you may want to act fast. The X4's future isn't guaranteed beyond the 2024 model. The X3 is due for a full redesign next year, but BMW hasn't confirmed a new X4. A fully electric version, the iX4, is in development and on track as a 2027 model. That leaves the gas-powered X4 with an uncertain future, and only a few remaining rivals, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 Coupe, Audi Q5 Sportback, and Volvo C40 Recharge. The Land Rover Range Rover Velar straddles the line between coupe and boxy, but it's longer, larger, and has more overall cabin space. For eye-catching style, exciting performance, and most of what you need in an SUV, however, the X4 is a top choice.
